CHICAGO (CBS) — Firefighters made a daring rescue high above the Loop Thursday morning, as two workmen nearly fell off their scaffolding at a high-rise office building downtown.
The two workmen were on a window-washing platform on the 16th floor of the Garland Building, at 50 E. Washington St. across Garland Court from the Chicago Cultural Center.
Something went wrong, and they were left dangling.

But firefighters quickly rushed in to help.
“Apparently one of the motors did not stop when they came to the floor that they wanted to work on. Fortunately, they were close to a window, and we were able to secure our firefighters and get them through a window,” said Chicago Fire Battalion Chief Steve Little.
Both men were successfully pulled through the window, and no one was hurt.

Window washer probe could take longer than expected (Calgary)

It could take six months to get to the bottom of what caused the platform holding two window-washers to fail Monday morning.

Occupational Health and Safety will begin speaking to witnesses of the accident as well as the company who employs the men who were left dangling in harnesses from a downtown building.

The Calgary Fire Department's high angle rescue team freed both men who were taken to hospital and suffered no injuries.

OHS says the interview and investigation process typically takes three to six months.

Two workers rescued after hanging by ropes from downtown Calgary office tower

A worker is taken away in an ambulance after firefighters rescue him and another worker after their platform gave way while working at the 12th floor of the Elveden Centre building on 7th Avenue and 7th Street S.W. on Monday June 11, 2012 in Calgary.

A dramatic rescue of two men left dangling 10 stories in the air off of a downtown high rise captivated the attention of hundreds of office workers Monday.
Fire crews were called to the Elveden Centre in the 700 block of 7th Avenue SW. around 10:30 a.m. to rescue two workers who had been left stranded, clinging to their life lines, after the platform beneath them collapsed.
Both men were successfully lowered into the bucket of an awaiting fire truck shortly before noon.
From a south-facing window on the 17th floor of Sun Life Plaza, Shovik Sengupta watched this morning’s harrowing scene unfold.
The data analyst said he looked out the window shortly before 11 a.m. to see two men dangling from ropes.
“At the first they weren’t moving. They were staying very still. I don’t know if it’s because they are injured or because they don’t want to mess up their safety harness,” said Sengupta.
Sengupta watched as a rescuer lowered himself to the men who were clinging to ropes approximately 10 stories above the ground.
Below where the men had been dangling, the ground appears to be littered with debris, including buckets and window washing equipment.
“We missed the fall but we heard the sirens and we all came to the window,” he said. “At first it was pretty jarring to see two guys hanging from the building who aren’t moving.”
“It’s never a comfortable thing to see first thing on a Monday morning and you hope for the best.”
A spokesperson with the Calgary fire department said both workers were wearing lifelines when the platform collapsed.
No injuries have been reported and investigators are looking into the cause of the accident.

Portland high-rise window washer makes panes shine, come rain or shine

http://media.oregonlive.com/portland_impact/photo/washer1jpg-2c0a74977e8a7f0f.jpg

He turned to the newspaper classifieds, where Clean Services Northwest had this advertisement: High-rise window washer needed.

Welsh was afraid of heights but applied anyway. When asked if he had any experience with high-rises, he lied.

His first job was on the tallest building on Clean Services Northwest's account, the 35-story KOIN Center. He nearly fainted with fear.
When Carlos Welsh was laid off six years ago, he worried how he would support his four young children. He took the first job he was offered, cleaning the exterior windows of Portland's tallest buildings.

He was terrified, but feeding a family trumped his fears. Fortunately for Welsh, he discovered a knack for hanging from a rope several stories above the pavement.

By now, the 28-year-old is so used to dangling with nothing below him but a bucket of suds and a few stories of atmosphere, he answers cellphone calls in midair.

"I've been cleaning long enough that I don't drop stuff," he says. "The new guys tie their phones to their clothes."

*****

Welsh, of Beaverton, was working as an indoor window cleaner when the boss cut his position.

"I didn't see myself, but I'm sure I was white and shaky," he says. "I was terrified."

Welsh made it through that first descent with the help of an experienced trainer. Within a few weeks, the fear diminished. Instead, his thoughts during a "jump" involved tailoring his window-cleaning strategy to the building's architecture.

http://media.oregonlive.com/portland_impact/photo/wash2jpg-65a83bbd4b4373d2.jpg

Armed with a squeegee and a bucket of soapy water, Carlos Welsh has rappelled from dozens of Portland’s highest buildings as a window washer for Clean Services Northwest.

"Each one is a little bit tricky," he says. "You have to know what you're doing."

Now, Welsh is the supervisor working alongside fear-stricken new trainees. He teaches them the ropes while they avoid looking down.

*****
On a recent Tuesday, Welsh and a partner begin a two-week project at The Metropolitan building on Northwest 10th Avenue and Lovejoy Street. At 225 feet, the luxury apartment building is the Pearl District's tallest.

His meticulous hands rarely miss a spot. Leave a streak on a window in those expensive penthouses, Welsh says, and you're bound to get complaints.

"We call it drip, when the water from your squeegee gets on the window," he says. "If your window doesn't look really good, you have to do it again."

After dropping a rope containing his bucket and a small stick of wood to sit on, he climbs over the edge and doesn't stop working until he reaches the ground.

Left to right, down, zigzag back up to the top left corner, then X marks the spot. One window down, countless more to go.

He swings over to the neighboring window and affixes a suction cup to the glass, using it to hold himself in place while he cleans. Right, down, zigzag, zigzag, X.

It's the same routine all the way down. Drop a few feet of rope, refasten your carabiner, dip your squeegee in the dish soap, and swipe.

Eight hours of this is taxing, Welsh says, but it beats sitting at a desk all day.

"I don't like feeling trapped in four walls," he says. "With this job, you're a few days on one building, then you're jumping another one. You're always moving around, and you get to enjoy the weather."

*****

Building managers are required to notify tenants a few days before window cleaners arrive, but Welsh still occasionally catches people off guard when he drops into view. Office workers, in particular, are easy to startle when they're absorbed in a task.

Other washers have caught people in the throes of passion, but Welsh's most extreme encounter was with a naked woman who promptly bolted from the room. She returned in a robe a moment later and opened the window to say hello and laugh about the incident.

"Some people are really nice and give you a tip," he says. "Others shut the blinds in front of you. They think you're looking in, but really you're just looking at the window."

Passing pedestrians often ask questions or shout salutations and words of encouragement. Children, in particular, get excited when they spot Welsh hanging high above.

"They're too little to understand how you're doing it," he says.

*****
Cleaning windows requires more than a head for heights. Today, for instance, Welsh has to contend with exterior beams that jut several yards from the building. To reach the windows, he'll have to swing in, then cling to the suction cup with one arm while the other reaches overhead to clean.

It's not easy on the arm muscles.

"Rock climbers have applied before, thinking it will be kind of like a sport," he says. "But it isn't as easy or fun as it looks to them."

His only protection is a breathable waterproof coat and pants, a baseball cap and a white beanie. No amount of padding would save him if he fell anyway, and accidents are extremely uncommon. Clean Services Northwest has never had one.

The Metropolitan project begins on a rainy, windy and frigid morning at the outset of a particularly wet week. Window washers squeegee through the elements.

"We try to work on the opposite side of the building so we're shielded from the wind," he says.

They cancel gigs only when the weather is unbearably bad. For all the job hazards, Welsh is paid $20 an hour.

At home, he cleans the windows only on nice days, about four times each year.

"I have little kids, so right after I clean the windows the handprints are all over anyway," he says.

Fearless window cleaners

Sky high in Shanghai: Fearless window cleaners at work outside the 101st floor of the world's fourth-tallest building

By Lyle Brennan

The wacky workplace slogan of a thousand coffee mugs has never been more true: You don't have to be crazy to work here, but it helps.

Outside the 101st floor of the Shanghai World Financial Center in China, window cleaners are shown preparing for their shift.

More than 30 workers on the window-cleaning team of the supertall skyscraper work in pairs every day.

Tall order: The city sprawls out into the smog as one of the window cleaners readies his squeegee at the Shanghai World Financial Centre, China

They have to obtain a licence for high-rise operations and must not have high blood pressure or, naturally, suffer a fear of heights.

They are not allowed items which could fall, such as mobile phones or wristwatches, and must stop working in heavy winds.

The centre is the fourth-tallest building in the world, standing at 1,614ft.

It opened in 2008 and houses the highest observation deck on Earth, while the Park Hyatt Shanghai, occupying the 79th to 93rd floors, is the world's second-highest hotel.

UNITED KINGDOM - Window Cleaning Company Fined When Worker Falls through Skylight

United Kingdom-based Central Window Cleaning Company Ltd. has been fined more than $100,000 (USD) (65,000 pounds) due to alleged safety offenses that led to one of its workers falling through a skylight at a local shopping center, according to information from the Southend-on-Sea Borough Council, which brought charges against the company.

The charges were brought against the company in the Southend Magistrates Court. In addition to the fine, the company faces approximately $14,000 in court costs, to be paid to the Council.

The incident occurred on June 4, 2010, when Tony Rose, 44, of Sittingbourne, Kent, United Kingdom, was working on the roof of the Royals Shopping Centre in Southend-on-Sea, United Kingdom, to clean the landmark dome at the top of the building. He stepped backwards on to a plastic skylight, which the Council alleges gave way beneath him. Rose fell three and half meters down on to a stairwell, and then a further three meters down the stairs and was bruised extensively, according to the release.

"We brought this prosecution because of the very serious health and safety issues which led to this incident," says Southend-on-Sea Borough Council's executive councillor for Public Protection, Waste and Transport, Tony Cox. "Mr Rose was exceptionally lucky not to have been more seriously injured or even killed … The firm failed to carry out a suitable risk assessment, which would have clearly identified the fragile surface, and also failed to take heed of the strict rules about working at height."

Firefighters rescue window washers stuck on Durham courthouse

The Durham Fire Department came to the rescue of a window washing crew on the new Durham County Justice Center Thursday afternoon. The crew of four was working on an elevated platform on the building, which is under construction at the corner of South Mangum and Dillard streets, when it got stuck between the eighth and ninth floors.

Firefighters headed to the roof and were able to help the four people up to safety. A representative of the company that built the platform accessed it from the roof, found the malfunction and lowered it, firefighters said.

No one was injured.

DURHAM – Durham firefighters made a dramatic rescue of four window washers Thursday after they got stuck between the eighth and nine floors outside the new downtown courthouse.

The platform they were on – called a swing stage – locked up just before noon as the washers for Sparkle and Shine were cleaning the windows.

Firefighters from the Durham Fire Department’s Technical Rescue Team responded, taking the elevator to the roof of the 11-story building under construction at South Mangum and Dillard streets. Using a rope system, they lowered a firefighter and one of the scaffolding company’s engineers about 12 feet to the platform.

They determined that a piece of equipment was needed and sent for it, according to Battalion Fire Chief David Elston. Meanwhile, firefighters used ropes and harnesses to raise the washers off the swing stage and onto the roof to safety.

A company engineer from Associated Scaffolding fixed the problem and firefighters lowered the swing stage to the ground.

No one was hurt.

Elston said the call came in to firefighters at 11:49 a.m. and the platform was lowered to the ground at 2:09 p.m.

He said Durham County Emergency Medical Services personnel stood by, and Durham police blocked off Mangum Street at Pettigrew Street to traffic.

“The window washers were very appreciative to get off there,” Elston said. “They were pretty spooked when they were stuck.”

Elston said firefighters train for similar emergencies all the time, but are seldom required to put that knowledge into practice.

“It’s nice sometimes to be able to use what we train for to help somebody,” he said. “We were completely confident in being able to get them out safely.”

Dad’s sick...so I’m running his window cleaning business

aking up dad’s mantle – window cleaner Jack Smith
aking up dad’s mantle – window cleaner Jack Smith

A SON is keeping his family window cleaning business afloat while his dad fights cancer.

Jack Smith, 20, from Basildon, didn’t want to see the company his father, Matthew Smith, worked hard to build up fold when his dad fell ill, so he took it on himself.

Matthew, 43, was diagnosed with kidney cancer two years ago and underwent gruelling chemotherapy. He is making a good recovery and has entered remission.

Jack, who lives with his dad in Spruce Close, used to work as an underwriter in London, but didn’t want to see Shine Cleaning Services fade away.

He said: “My dad had done it for 15 years, so I decided to take it on. We’re really close – I’d call my dad my best friend – and I feel really proud to have kept the business going by following in his footsteps.

“My dad can’t handle the physical side of the job any more.

“He’s still a bit involved in the financial side, although I do most of it myself.”

Many of the cleaning company’s regular customers have been hiring its services for more than a decade because they built up a rapport with outgoing and friendly Matthew.

Jack said: “A lot of them are pleased to see me carrying on the business, because he was so popular.”

Jack currently cleans houses and small commercial properties across south Essex, but plans to expand the business in the future by securing big contracts and taking on staff.

He said: “I’d love to clean some of the big skyscrapers in London and it would be great to get a contract with Southend Airport, because it’s a big local business.

“If I had children one day it would be great if they could carry the family business into a third generation.”

Man confesses to love of Window Cleaning

Window Cleaning

While some people may find Window Cleaning a chore, one man has admitted that he simply loves doing it.

Writing on Australia's The Chronicle, Greg Johnson, the chief executive of Toowoomba Chamber of Commerce, told his readers of his passion for Window Cleaning.

He explains that, when window cleaning, he sprays on the cleaning agent, agitates it with the reverse sponge side of the squeegee, and then uses long strokes on the pane with the squeegee.

After this he uses a wet cloth to get moisture out of the corners before using a dry cloth on the surface.

Such is his passion for Window Cleaning that he interviewed professional cleaner Terry Koukoulis, asking for some tips.

The cleaner told Mr Johnson that washing up liquid can be added to a bucket of water for a great solution.

Following this, the cleaner should agitate the sponge side of the applicator on the window surface to get at any tough bits.

They should then squeegee the liquid off in one operatic action that never leaves the surface of the window, before taking a dry cloth to the corners.

It is important to get window cleaning right, because even if people scrub the rest of their home, if the panes are left dirty then it can look unkempt and maybe even derelict.

Good Samaritan rescues man left clinging to roof

Published on Saturday 3 March 2012 14:33

A LOCAL window cleaner was left clinging to the roof of a home for half an hour last week as fierce gusts knocked over his ladders, leaving him struggling to stay on the roof.

Yet even as he clung onto the roof traffic drove by as he called for help with only one good Samaritan stopping to help, which he believes saved him from a broken leg or worse.

Stoneyford man Neil Gardner, from Classic Cleaning, was on a sloping roof as he cleaned windows near the Down Royal Racecourse when the drama began last Thursday.

He was left clinging onto the roof from 16 feet in the air for around half an hour.

Neil said: “It was only about 15 to 16 feet high, but I would have broken my leg at least if I had fallen. I am very grateful to the person who stopped for me. I was calling for help but there was nobody around and the homes were all empty because it was the middle of the day.

“I tried to wave down traffic but only one lorry stopped and then drove on saying they couldn’t help me; who would do that to another human being?

“It was horrible anticipating how to jump down, wondering if I could reach nearby bushes to break my fall.”

Neil added: “The person who helped me showed up in a builder’s lorry and he found the ladders that had blown off the side of the house, which allowed me to get down. All I really want is to thank the guy who saved me and say thanks very much, I very much appreciate it.”

Neil, who has been cleaning windows for 18 years, says this is the first time that anything like this has ever happened. The incident also meant that he was late to collect his four-year-old and one-year-old children from Nursery.

Despite his ordeal, he says that it won’t put him off in the future.

“This has never happened to me before, besides, I’ve got to pay the mortgage” he said.

Learn All About Window Cleaning Equipment

November 26, 2011 | Author: Mike Thornton | Posted in Small Business

Whether you are a professional window cleaner or just have to clean your own windows at home, you know the importance of good window cleaning equipment. If you buy quality products then you will be able to clean efficiently and do quality work. After buying equipment for twenty years for my husband and our eight window cleaning employees, I can tell you the best equipment to get. You may be in for some surprises when it comes to what you need.

Buckets: Window cleaners may use standard 5 gallon buckets or special rectangular ones. While it is largely a matter of personal preference here, the rectangular buckets offer an ergonomic handle, better balance of the water and accommodate long squeegees better. If you have back problems, switch hands each time you pick up the bucket to even the pull on your back. A bucket on a belt offers a more even pull by clipping to the belt. It holds enough water for a single window and is easily transported.

Sponge or Wetter: To clean the window, you must spread the cleaning solution onto the window. Natural sea sponges have a long history of use and are good for tight corners and crevices. Some cleaners prefer the synthetic yellow sponges and others may prefer a fabric wetter. The wetter can be attached to the end of a pole and is ideal for large glass surfaces.

Lint-free towels: Professionals choose lint free towels. These include cloth diapers, chamois, or huck towels. Huck towels are the blue towels that doctors use on their instrument trays during surgery. Once used they are sanitized and recycled for use in cleaning. Lint free towels must be washed and dried separate from other clothes or they will pick up lint.

Squeegee: This is a very important tool, so you want to make sure that you purchase a quality Ettore squeegee from a professional cleaning supply company and not a hardware store. Sorry to say, that you can not be cheap on this important product. You will be glad that you paid the extra money for a good squeegee in the end. You can buy many sizes to suit all of your needs. The bigger they are, the harder they are to use though.

Rubber Blades, aka rubbers, (don’t laugh, they are really called rubbers): These funny nicknamed products are the blade for the squeegee. Good window cleaners will change their rubbers at least once a day.

I hope that these tips will help you. Enjoy cleaning!

If you're interested in a job as a window washer, it helps to get used to climbing things.

For example, Erick Soulard said he was always climbing trees as a kid.

"Now, I like to climb windows and sides of buildings to get my job done," he said.

Armed with Sunlight soap and a normal scrub brush, Soulard said he works from either a platform (called a stage) or a harness called a bosun's chair.

He and his brother Rob are the third generation of Soulards to do the job.

"My dad showed me . . . how to clean a window back then and I knew what I wanted to be – a window cleaner," said Erick, who said he had wanted to do this since he was six. "I just love it."

The tallest building Erick has worked on was 35 storeys, but he said one of his scariest encounters had nothing to do with the building he was working on – he was attacked by a Peregrine falcon.

"It was actually in its nest and got off the nest, swooped back at me," he said. "It had the babies and basically just kept swooping until I got off the top of the building."

The job of a window washer can also hold surprises of another kind – what's going on behind the windows you scrub.

"Unfortunately, I can't share what I see through the windows," he said. "That's for me to know and you to find out!"

Window Cleaners: They Do The Dirty Work For You

No one likes to wash his or her own windows. Some windows can be downright dangerous to wash, especially if you do not have the proper equipment. When your windows need washing, call in professional window cleaners. They will be equipped properly to get the job done faster and safer.

The most common equipment for window washing is a squeegee and clean soapy water. A number of cleaning fluids are available but many professionals use ordinary dish soap still. However, this may leave a film that attracts dirt, while other types of cleaners may keep the windows cleaner.

Bigger window cleaning businesses may invest in what is called a water fed pole. It can be used to reach places that are high up and not easily reached by a ladder. The windows are rinsed with purified water that does not leave marks after drying. In addition to this advantage, this system also cleans more thoroughly.

For really high windows, such as in office buildings, window cleaning companies may use cradles or platforms that can be hung down from the top of the building. The platforms may be referred to as scaffolding, among other terms.

Recently, some experimenting has been done washing windows with robots. This has proven faster than having people do the washing as well as infinitely safer. Window cleaning can be a profession that is very dangerous, in particular when it is being done on very high skyscrapers.

Using window cleaners is a smart way to get the job done. Your windows will be cleaner than you could get them and you will stay safer. Many cleaning companies are also insured and licensed so you can have even more confidence in hiring them.

Reasons for Hiring A Professional Window Cleaner

Your home is your most prized possession and proper maintenance including window washing, gutter cleaning, roof cleaning and moss removal should be your first priority. You cannot really afford to let your home crumble due to lack of proper upkeep and it is essential that the above processes are done at regular intervals. In this fast-paced world, it is very difficult to find the time to put in the required effort to climb a ladder and clean windows or remove moss. Moreover, people do not possess the necessary high pressure truck mounted equipment or power washing tools that are essential for this work.

Reasons for Hiring A Professional Window Cleaner

It is necessary to hire the services of professional agencies that are experienced in this line and can do the job quickly, efficiently and at a price that you can afford. Whether it is your home or your business, it would be advisable to browse the websites of various professional window cleaners and entrust the job to one of them after checking their credentials, price and experience.

For gutter cleaning, professional window cleaners use truck mounted special vacuum systems that can clean gutters thoroughly and extract the debris. The entire debris is removed by the agency from the site and disposed off in an official recycling location. The truck mounted system is also ideal for roof cleaning, because it eliminates the need to climb roofs, thereby minimizing the possibility of damage to expensive roof materials.

Professional window washing agencies use pressure washing systems that ensure a deep exterior cleaning of your home or business irrespective of the type of house, whether it is painted or has siding or bricks. This is the best way to get rid of the dirt from every nook and corner of the exterior of the house. Window washing is done with the help of water fed poles and de-ionized water technology and this ensures that the windows are absolutely clean. Professional cleaners can complete the job in a matter of hours depending on the size of your home and the number of windows it has.

Why Do We Need Clean Windows?

A dirty and smeared window obstructs the view from inside your home. It is essential to clean the windows to enjoy the beautiful view outside. A clear shiny window will reflect the hot rays of the sun more efficiently and this will result in better heat efficiency. With natural light coming in through your glass panes, your energy costs will reduce and in the winter months, the heat will be conserved inside the room, if the glass is clean. On the other hand, if the glass is dirty, none of the above benefits can be enjoyed.

If the window glass is not cleaned for a long time, it can get etched and stained besides giving an unkempt look to the home. Gradually, the glass will get damaged due to the presence of pollutants and it will have to be replaced which can be an expensive proposition.

Regular window cleaning is recommended by the National Glass Association (NGA) to reduce the risk of harmful deposits and consequent damage to the glass. Professional window washers are trained in this job but you need to find the best online company to do it.
